Normally, I abhor the idea of damaging a book in the name of art, but for photographer Thomas Allen I can make an exception.
Allen creates dramatic pop-up diorama’s out the cover art from pulp paperbacks. After carefully composing the cut-out figures into cinematic scenarios, he photographs them. By deploying a shallow depth of field and noir like lighting, Allen brings gives these worn paperbacks an entirely new life. Yet never for a moment does he forget their pulp roots, creating a world of tough dames and gin swilling brawlers.
