Uhuru
Uhuru: the über cool of urban organic. One of the most unique design + build furniture companies
on the planet. Founded in 2004 by Bill Hilgendorf and Jason Horvath.

Aside from being totally laid back & urber cool, these guys live
& breathe urban organic. From their Red Hook, Brooklyn studio, this furniture company creates utilitarian designs out
of just about anything: reclaimed pine from demolished NYC buildings,
old bicycle rims, recycled steel and other "such attractive waste."

Another reason to love Uhuru: they are truly devoted
to sustainability issues.

"For
us sustainability is about choosing materials with the least amount of
environmental impact, whether it is what they are made of, how they are
produced or where they come from, and using them in a way where little
to no waste is created."

Uhuru.TheChair
The Bilge Lounge Chair is crafted by using reclaimed bourbon barrel
staves from Kentucky and used truck springs. This chair is ~ true green.

Uhuru+Slab+Table
The Slab Dining Table is handcrafted from large wood slabs of English
Elm from sustainably harvested trees, ~ no two are alike and they keep
plenty of slabs in stock for custom orders. Check out this eco-friendly
bunch at www.uhurudesign.com.

SlabBed

This low-profile Slab Bed, from another one of my Brooklyn favs, is the perfect
fit for any urban loft. Hand-crafted from domestic White Ash, this bed
is shown in their popular Live Edge Claro Walnut, hand-rubbed, oil
finish. Feel free to stop by the studio to pay Mr. Tyler Hays a visit
or check out his other innovative, woody designs at www.bddw.com.
