I work for dorms at WSU in Utah, so I have loads of ideas!!

Every dorm room needs a theme- whether a common color, era, shape, etc. I have always been a fan of BedBath&Beyond's dorm section since they're relatively inexpensive and have great selection.

Having continuity makes the space (whether large or small) really feel like one's own, which gives it homey-ness, no matter how far away mom and dad really are.

I actually just got a lot of dorm stuff from BB&B for my sister and she loves all the pink and brown bedding I hooked her up with!

After spending four years in the tiny on-campus apartments, I'm all for anything that folds up or serves as extra storage space. 2Modern's Copa Cabana set has an excellent sofa-bed, but none of those sets would survive in the cramped space at my old dorm. It would be claustrophobic.

My inspiration for a dorm room is biological structures, since these tend to fit well together. And a blue/brown palette that doesn't get wrecked easily. To make it one's own, it's more a matter of what goes on the walls, as at my alma mater you could not alter or change anything in the room. I covered mine in anatomy posters and club notes; you could tell it was my room in milliseconds.
