FilzFelt Rugs

The use of felt in modern decor has been a pretty hot trend for a while now.  I've mostly seen it used in small scale applications (coasters, laptop bags, ornaments, etc.), so it's exciting to see these larger rugs from FilzFelt.  Available in sizes up to 6x9, these felt rugs are handmade from German wool and dyed using the Pantone Matching System.  What does this mean for you?  An eco-friendly floor covering in 20 amazing colors!

FilzFelt was founded by two felt loving designers, Kelly Smith and Traci Roloff. FilzFelt is a combination of the German word for felt (filz) and the English (felt). Since we’re Americans importing German felt, it seemed like the right fit! This female run business prides itself on simplicity in design, beautiful photography, good packaging and jaw-droppingly great customer service. Audiowood Turntables

I love that turntables are back in! And these sculptured wood ones created by Joel Scilley’s of Audiowood are truly works of art. The organic designs and detailed woodworking adds warmth and personality to the technology.

" You won't find much veneer here, nor will you see anything you've seen elsewhere. I'm building things that sound great, that work well, and that enhance musical experiences with their absolutely unique character."

New custom turntables range from approximately $1000 to $3500 depending on parts and design.

MYchair :: Walter Knoll

This sculptural lounge chair from furniture giant Walter Knoll pushes the envelope of modern furniture design.  A recent recipient of the coveted Red Dot Design Award: Best of the Best, MYchair offers up a dynamic and expressive form.  Straight lines give way to curves, concave and convex forms appear depending on your angle - I love this sense of playfulness!  The bold upholstery really accentuates this, as well.

Though its avant-garde appearance may deter some, I think this chair is quite versatile.  I'd love to see it in an actual home.  Do you think the MYchair would work in "realistic" spaces?  What about your home?  Share your thoughts!

Think Inside

This woodworking studio combines a modern aesthetic with traditional woodworking skills to think actually outside the box.  Think Inside, new on the scene since April 2009, brings years of experience to the table.  The duo of Cal Kelly and Luke Cacciapaglia have old school attention to detail shown in their innovative designs that solve spatial challenges.   One of my favorite concepts is the murphy bed, which Think Inside interprets with a nod to the past and a whimsical look to the future. The warm colors and combination of woods, which they clearly love, create an inviting room. 

I love the wall unit that separates the space and hides a staircase creating interest and functionality.

Debut of their furniture line with coffee or side tables, is just the beginning.   Inspired by an old French car, the Citroen DS, we call this line the DS Collection.  These two tables are called Dip with two more in the collection, Split and Dive in prototype stage.

Bits and Pieces

Bits ‘n Pieces is a traveling exhibition of work by international designers, architects, computer scientists, and material and technology researchers. It will showcase projects still in their development stage, as well as furniture, architecture, jewelry, graphic design and products that anticipate the next phase of the digital revolution, focusing on how society is imbued with, shaped by and shapes technology. This new era will be marked by increased awareness about, and accessibility of, continuously advancing technologies and materials and the changes that we will be making in our lives through them will be not just formal but structural, not merely aesthetic but substantive, changing how we actually think about, design and build our objects and space. What will life look like based on changes that are sometimes visible to the public and sometimes invisible? 

There are some pretty cool projects showcased in the exhibit, I like the concept of the Brain Waive Sofa.

Brainwave Sofa is a collaboration between Lucas Maassen and Dries Verbruggen from Unfold

The shape of the Brainwave Sofa is entirely determined by recording 3 seconds of Maassen’s neural 'alpha' activity the very moment he closed his eyes. The resulting 3 second computerfile is sent to a CNC milling machine that mills out the Brainwave sofa in soft foam. It is a tongue-in-cheek reference to a futuristic production workflow in which the designer only has to close his eyes and a computer 'prints' the result out as a functional form. A warm grey felt with buttons in the valleys is applied by hand to the foam honoring the traditional codes of a sofa.

Pedro Useche

The Venezuela born furniture designer Pedro Useche can work with wood as few could. The shapes and volumes are graceful and yet powerful, contemporary and yet timeless. Simply what high quality design should be!

Pedro has been awarded several times and his pieces are always part of  big and prestigious exhibitions all around Brazil and South America.

Furniture Forever

Tall Tree Guild’s beautifully constructed metal furniture has a terrific simplicity to it.  The designer J Foley reinterprets some classic designs, giving them a unique character with the color and exposed metal.  Totally cool!

Yes, it's just a pillow, but it makes me sooo happy! Look at those colors! "Roy" is made from mill ends or leftover fabric from fabric mills. And it comes in two colors (blue -- shown here -- and red).
