Wow! Love loving Michelle Armas’ bold and bright modern fine art paintings. Energetic and cheerful, they really infuse the viewer with a sense of optimism. And the colors are superb: lots of warm reds, yellows and oranges mix with greens and more. Abstract and modern, drips mingle with slight geometric shapes. Though they don’t have a lot of depth, we enjoy their slightly landscape-ish feel. More on Michelle Armas’ website.

We’d be lying if we said we could completely understand what’s going on with this DIY project; the site we found it on is in Portuguese and Google Translator isn’t working its best work today. Like, we’re not entirely sure where you get a giant piece of gray felt…maybe you make it? Or maybe a fabric store? The point is if you have a giant sheet of felt and some neon-colored yarn you might have an awesome DIY project on your hands. More information on Casa de Colorir.

Crosson Clark Carnachan Architects hit one out of the ball park with their cute and clever Whangapoua Sled House. We just love modern design that isn’t huge; that’s a reasonable size but still has everything you need and looks great. Located on a white sand beach on New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula, the home is tall, narrow and covered in lovely wood hues.

“Designed to close up against the elements, the hut measures a mere 40 square metres and rests on two thick wooden ‘sleds’ that allow it to be shifted around the beach front section. This innovative portability is a response to the ever changing landscape that line the beachfront in this coastal erosion zone.”

Not sure how we missed this when all the Milan design week excitement was going on, but we just discovered interior designer and architect Rabih Hage’s “The Leftover Collection” for Corian® Colour Evolution. Used to promote the new colors available for this material, Hage used leftover pieces from building to create new, stunning furniture pieces.

“I have always been fascinated by unused material or discarded cuts of stone, wood or metal whether chea or expensive. Reusing these materials as a luxury product and treating the off-cuts as something precious is my real motivation…” More information on the Dupont website.

I’d consider getting waxed for this! Located in the upscale neighborhood of Polanco, Mexico City, this is the second branch of Wax Revolution, a new epilation chain based in Mexico. As you can see, this space is bold, angled, colorful and not what you usually think of when you imagine the interiors of these kinds of businesses.

From Row Studio’s website: “The first challenge was to give notoriety to an otherwise invisible space, for this we proposed a faceted structure made from a sequence of black steel frames descending from the street to the salon in a similar fashion to a subway entrance thus making the site evident to the enormous traffic of people strolling and driving by. The brand sign is fixed from the uppermost frame with its two lateral faces tilted to a 45° angle to allow maximum visibility of the logo to the passersby.” Lots more photos and information can be found on Row Studio’s website.

You know, as much as we love drooling over stunningly modern homes that only the very luckiest and richest few could probably afford, we also enjoy loving on a home that is totally accessible! You can say that’s our whole raison d’etre here at 2Modern — showing you that modern, in all its iterations, is available to everyone who wants it.

We spotted this home of Helen and Garson on the great blog Old Brand New. You can see, instantly, what a stunner of a place this is. Yeah, they’ve got some pretty sweet retro Mid-Century Modern pieces, but they also visually give the best tip to how to create a modern space when you don’t have a lot of modern dough (or a brilliant modern piece of architecture on a cliff somewhere overlooking the sea): it’s all in the vignette’s baby.

We’re loving Raymond Lemstra’s drawings of characters. They’re at once primative and futuristic. Kind of like monsters, kind of like robots and kind of like tribal masks, they’re a mix of different things but altogether they create a look that is totally unique and one-of-a-kind. Life MUST be difficult for whoever lives in the Owhanake Bay House in Waiheke Island, New Zealand designed by Strachan Group Architects. It’s like they’re living in some desolate prison yard. Yuck…NOT.

“Located on Waiheke Island, a 19km ferry journey from down-town Auckland, the Owhanake Bay house hunkers-down below a ridge line at the head of a gully. Slowing to the pace of “island life”, the house turns its back on the city to engage the view east over the outer islands of the Hauraki Gulf.”

“Designed for a semi-retired couple, ease of movement and single level accessibility were requirements that set challenges for design on a site with a significant natural slope.”

At a recent UK exhibition we came across an innovative and stylish way of expanding living space within our own homes. The system allows a bed to glide into the ceiling, opening up rooms as multifunctional living areas.

For a growing family like ours a system like this is extremely useful and much more cost effective than moving house.

This book might not have as many juicy color photos as the other books we’ve been giving away this week, but anyone who’s a type lover will really dig this book. “Type Matters!”  by Jim Williams and published by Merrell Publishers is a jolly little soft-cover book that looks almost more like a notebook than a book you might read.

Filled with lots of knowledge, you’ll learn about the background of type design, how headlines and display types are set, about text setting and a lot of nitty gritty details about things like hanging punctuation and ligatures and diphthongs and other things typeface lovers and grammar nerds will enjoy.

Eeep! Loving this cute DIY paper geo-ball project we found on the French site Zu Galerie (via Cherry Plum). Providing a free-to-download-and-print-yourself template, you could make these little cuties as storage for office supplies on your desk at home or work, or as cute decorations for a shelf or table in your home.

You would never think this, but it’s pretty tough to find a cool modern outdoor tablecloth. Believe us, we’ve tried. We’ve decided that to get the look we want, we might have to resort to a DIY decision, and thankfully, we came across this great tutorial on Yellow Brick Home.

It definitely looks involved with a lot of steps and some work, but it doesn’t look like too terribly difficult work, and in the end you’ll get an awesome made-it-myself way to punch up your outdoor space. We sound like a broken record sometimes, but truly: we’re amazed that anyone can come up with a new design with traditional furniture shapes anymore! It always seems like everything’s been done before and then you come across something like Zoë Mowat’s work and you realize you’ve just been delighted and surprised again.

Lots of curved, gentle edges exist in this great designer’s work. Color-blocked pops of bold hues mix with strong wood grains. Pattern, subtle as it is, becomes a part of each piece but not in a way that is distracting from the form.

Accessories and details are given as much as attention as the overall composition of a piece. Everything’s just so darn…good looking.

The angled lines of this little refuge are unmistakably dramatic and functional.  It is all about the outdoors with the emphasis on the terrace, while the triangular walls  protect the Villa Mecklin from the wind, provide some shade  and give privacy.

Villa Mecklin, designed by Huttunen-Lipasti-Pakkanen Architects,  is located in the Finnish archipelago taking advantage, as it should, of the view and the sun. It sits between rocks, its sheltered terrace extending over the summit, offering a visual connection with the shoreline.  There is a separate structure for the sauna.  The wood burning fire pit and the stove heated cabins provide warmth when the sun goes down and is not filling the house with warm light.
The building materials selected for Villa Mecklin are uncontrived, basic ones suited for the archipelago. All wood surfaces have been left untreated and will turn grey naturally.  The Villa was built in 2008. The floor area of the villa is appx 753 sq. feet with the sauna being appx 210 sq feet.

Have an infinitely modern day!

In honor of today’s Book Week book about bookshelves, we present a fun little bookshelf someone emailed to us earlier this week. Made by the Italian company Koloo, the Cesare L Shelf is made of a white steel structure that has interchangeable, magnetic panels in different colors and materials like acrylic, stone, ceramic, glass, eco-leather, metal, wood and plexiglas. Made in Italy, it’d be fun to get a few of these not just because they have so many finish options, but because you could change the look of them easily if you ever got tired. More on the Koloo.

Nothing says “I have serious style” like an all black kitchen.  This particular space has fantastic worn cabinetry that has been updated with a nice coat of black.  The subway tiles filling the wall give the kitchen a fresh and clean vibe, while the lights above the sink add an industrial feel.  We are digging this kitchen!

Yay for books! Who doesn’t love a ton of books!? Even if you don’t love to read books as much as we do, you could be one of those folks who just likes having a lot of books around the house (for looks or comfort). The point is, lots of books need storage space. You could go with a boring old set of level, rectangular bookshelves, but why not at least consider all the other options out there?

Yum. We love when craftspeople describe themselves as a “maker of things.” Really shows that they feel connected to the actual process of building with materials. Which, in turn, makes people feel more connected to the products that they’re shelling a little extra out on. It’s a beautiful cycle that has certainly grown in popularity and a cycle we hope to continue to see more of in the future.

Eric Trine, Portland-based, self-proclaimed “maker of things” makes good things. Sleek, yes, but earthy things. Taken from his bio: “I’m a maker. I’m a designer and an artist, but both of those attributes are channeled through the act of making. If I was an architect, I’d also have to be the builder. You know what I mean?”

Absolutely love the DIY project spotted on the The Proper Pinwheel. Though pillar candles can certainly be fun as a simple addition to the home, they could use some spicing up. Lexy does something pretty ingenious with those “grippy” drawer liners you can find at any home supply store. Partner that with some neon spray paint and you’ve really got something. We love: the added pop of neon, the texture and how you could do this pretty simply. We don’t love: how it looks like if you’re not super control-freaky about keeping the liner straight. We love modern. Like, real modern that is sleek and kind of looks like the interior of a space ship. We also like modern in terms of Mid-Century Modern. Retro modern. Shapes and lines that hearken back to that awesome period of design time. So when the two mix? Whoo wee we love LOVE it.

Austin-based husband and wife team Cindy and Rick Black do an amazing job rehabbing and redesigning older bungalows in Austin (as well as new design), and this one is a definite example of awesomeness.

“This renovation improved upon some common design problems with the typical bungalow form. A gracious new stair constructed of reclaimed douglas fir and pine creates a defined entryway; walls were removed to open up the kitchen to the dining and breakfast areas; and the side entry was reconfigured to include a desk, plenty of drawers for storage, and laundry. The drywall at the kitchen and dining was peeled away to reveal the original shiplap, which was painted green to bring a saturated, warm color to the space.”

Don’t let the simple exterior of the book “Inside Prefab: The Ready-Made Interior” by Deborah Schneiderman and published by Princeton Architectural Press fool you: this small book packs a powerful punch of prefab inspiration. But instead of focusing on the prefabricated architectural world which is well-documented, Deborah delves into the world of in pre-made interiors.

She first starts off with a few pages of history about prefab (bonus points for mentioning Buckminster Fuller) and then jumps into covering great examples and strides in prefab interior design, from projects that seem more like an art installation and not really like something that a normal person might use to really interesting ideas that seem futuristic yet totally accessible.

Halfway through the book you come to Oma’s Rache, the origin of the front cover’s design, and you realize the front cover isn’t a black and white drawing, but a compact, fold-out kitchen designed by some clever German designers. The book itself is divided into sections like bathrooms, furniture and then ends on entire prefabricated interiors.

Overall the the photos are a bit on the small size, but the book has a good feel to it, and is fun to flip through to learn more about what the future of our interiors might look like! Check out more information and buy this book at the Princeton Architectural Press site.

Yay for silly and happy-inducing graphics and patterns! We’ve been a big fan of textile designer Laurie Wisbrun’s patterns for awhile now, but we’re really digging some of her adorable new products with cute graphics! That hipster llama is pretty cute, and looks fun on a journal. We love the use of one of her well-known graphics on tape! Love the colorful Flapdoodle Hat fabric! Bright, fresh and airy. That’s all we’re really looking for in a modern space (well, except when we’re looking for something cozy and dark…or something else…we like a lot of stuff, okay?!) and the Tarrytown House remodel by Austin-based Webber + Studio delivers like a mofo.

We’re fainting over those gorgeous retro-modern windows over that stunning wood plank tub in the bathroom. Imagine getting to look out over some carefully manicured organic wildlife while you soak in a nice warm bath.

Love the mix of bright punches of color and modern accessories and furniture that mix with the lofty orangey-yellow wood tones of the architecture and built-in cabinets. We don’t normally love that color of wood tone but here it works and is so optimistic.

Interesting choice using a darker wood outside, but overall creates a more fun contrast with all the greenery. Can we live here? Ooof. More on Webber + Studio’s website.

Anyone who’s ever looked at a design blog or Pinterest knows that wallpaper — patterned, bold, colorful, subtle, relaxing — is back in a big way, and probably will be around for years to come. “The Wallpaper Book” by Geneviève Brunet published this year by the fabulous Thames & Hudson will make any wallpaper lover melt with envy (yet also inspire and motivate!).

Everyone knows how popular wallpaper has become again in interiors, but what of its history? What of its future? The Wallpaper Book aims to inform as well as inspire with its over 300 illustrations and color photos that trace wallpaper’s start with handcrafted papiers peints during the 18th century all the way through the industrious Arts and Crafts movement through modernism and that colorful bold Mid-Century time of Pop Art and more.

It’s not all about the past, though. Brunet talks about contemporary wallpaper designs and artists…the looks that are shaping interiors currently. It talks about the new ways in which current designers are reinterpreting this traditional art, and how homeowners are using wallpaper in ways never thought of or dreamed of before.

Practically, you’ll find some lists of where to go to get wallpaper by country and also learn about the wallpaper collections that exist around the world. You’ll also pick up a ton of inspiration for your own home if you’ve been itching to add some color and pattern in a way that paint just can’t do! Maybe it’s the light. Maybe it’s just the great angles that the architectural photographer used in the shots. The Summer House by Judith Benzer Architektur located in Burgenland, Austria is simply stunning.

“The project Summer House in Southern Burgenland (Austria) describes a sharp-edged cubature which fits into its surroundings through its simplicity and homogeneous appearance.”

“In being used as a summer house, and by virtue of the installation of a wine cellar with production surfaces at a later date, the building’s design is oriented by the cubature of the Kellerstöckel (wine house) typical of the Southern Burgenland region.”

Love the liberal use of all the dark gray that mixed with the soft, blond wood walls, ceiling and floor. Love the “house” shape to the structure; it just feels like a “home.”
