Ode to New York City Cabs: VIPP 2009 Limited Edition Yellow Cab

Vipp Yellow Cab 02

Gasoline powered taxis were introduced in New York in 1907 by young businessman Harry N. Allen. He was also the first to introduce the yellow color on taxis. He did this after learning that yellow is the colour easiest seen from a distance. In 1960 the city of New York decided that all taxis were to be painted yellow.

Today, New York is home to more than 13.000 yellow cabs. This number is known because a special license is required in order to own a yellow cab. The license was introduced in 1937 at a cost of 10 dollars. The license can be sold on by the owner, and the major taxi companies are willing to pay large sums for it. In 2007, the price of a license had risen to 600.000 dollars.

Vipp Family

The Vipp story - Danish design since 1939

Vipp is founded in 1939 by Holger Nielsen. Born in 1914 in the small Danish town of Randers, Holger trains as a metal spinner.

Holger Nielsen makes the leap into business at the age of only 17 and almost by coincidence. It all begins one spring Sunday in May 1931 when he makes his usual visit to the local stadium to support his favorite football team. Fate has it that his ticket is drawn in a raffle, and he wins a car. Holger loves cars, but as he has no driver's license, he decides to sell the car and invest the money in a metal turning lathe.

This marks the birth of Holger Nielsen's metal factory where, a few years later, he produces the very product that will go on to bring him fame: the Vipp pedal bin.

Sky Factory Virtual Windows

The Sky Factory creates illusions of blue skies, landscapes and even deep space and makes them available for installation in homes, businesses or to anyone wanting to create a sense of well being in their space. Installation includes options for ceilings as well as walls, and there are quite a bit of scenes to choose from. Studies have shown that the sight of blue skies and nature create a calming effect of deep relaxation and inner peace, which is why they're so popular in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and cancer facilities, but just as effective in residential spaces as well.

In one of the photos in particular below, a man creates an amazing room in honor of his favorite movie, Star Wars. Created for his children as a getaway and a distraction from television, this large basement is now a dreamlike family room which gives a feeling of being in a spacecraft. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Make sure to take a look at their Portfolio and Image Catalog while your there.

Bocci Pendant Lighting

Bocci pendant lamps come in many options and are as beautiful as they are versatile. Existing of cast glass, the lights contain frosted hollow centers which hold 10 watt bulbs, giving the illusion of candles floating in water. In a dining or bedroom setting, the feel is undeniably romantic, evoking a feeling of relaxation and intimacy. Commercial spaces get posh and dramatic, and bathrooms become spa-like. Huge, cold spaces like that of a warehouse loft benefit with instant drama and warmth, as well as the smaller living spaces of your home.

Styles include Custom, which are arranged to suit your taste, Standard, which are predesigned in linear and clustered form, and Sconce, which attach to ceilings or walls.

Custom: Arrange lighting in a custom configuration to suit your design needs.

Hung in front of a window, the effects are multiplied as they mimic city lights and a star filled sky.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year!

2009 will certainly go down as a very memorable one, to say the least. I think there will be a lot of reflection on what exactly transpired over this past year. There is no need to rehash it all, the Media does a great job at keeping us up to date with every detail possible.

I guess the one thing that I can decipher from all of this is this...if you are in a position of power, and your decisions impact several people, then make sure that you are acting with other people's best interest in mind. Make sure that your integrity is in check and that you are as concerned with other people's well-being as your own.

CEO's, Politicians, Hedge Fund Managers (Ponzi Scheme Operators), Teachers, Parents, etc...we all inherently know right from wrong. We all know when we are looking to 'just get ours', regardless of the end result of our actions on others.

I am sure I am preaching to the choir...as most of the people that are the root cause of some of these current global concerns will likely never read this, let alone have it sink in. Maybe if we start giving more attention to the people that are doing good things for people, doing the right or selfless thing when no one is even watching, then things will start to change in a positive direction. I hope that good behavior is rewarded and bad behavior isn't in 2009. That is my wish.

I sincerely hope that all of you out there have a very Happy, Healthy (and Conscious) New Year!

Greg
