The Design Tokujin Yoshioka

Tokujinyoshiokady1

Tokujin Yoshioka is a designer that I am not extremely familiar with, but in 2007 he was named Design Miami's Designer of the Year, and in 2008 he was named best furniture designer of the year in the Wallpaper Design Awards.  So when I started to explore his work it was as if a creative shroud had been lifted from my eyes. His work is punctuated by his extremely acute sense of drama and his ability to take simple materials or modular units such as a drinking straw or a crystal, in the case of his work for Swarovski, and turn it into something yet unknown until Mr. Yoshioka revealed it.

Tokujinyoshiokady2
Tokujin Yoshioka is a renaisance man who works in every medium of design, so paring down projects of note to two is quite impossible, however, I'll try. The first I'm picturing above is his work for the design Miami Designer of the Year show. The medium he chose was a simple translucent drinking straw. Multiplied by tens of thousands of times, and this straw takes on the form of a wintery crystal world where walls and floors are blurred into a dream.

His work for Swarovski is equally dreamy.  Each year, Swarovski invites a number of designers to undertake the most ambitious use of crustals they can dream up. Last year, Yoshioka went to extremes as he created an interactive, three dimensional television using thousands of the crystals as the pixels of the screen. The effect he created was unlike anything every seen because of his design to layer several images at once through different levels of the crystal matrix.

Future projects include a Swarovski showroom where the designer uses thousands of crystal tubes to make up the facade of the building.

One From Wallpaper's Design Awards: Cubic Meter Shelving by Arik Levy

Arik_levy_cubic_meter

Wallpaper recently came out with their design awards issue, and one piece that just immediately popped out at me was the One Square Meter by Arik Levy. This piece is one in a treasure trove of Mr. Levy's pieces that shows true genius. It is a modular shelving system that can break out into any form you want, or it can be compressed into its original shape of a one square meter cube (thus, the name). The finishes in the original collection came in black and natural oak and was limited to a production of 10. However, it appears that Paul Smith has bought the rights to make this piece and will be going into larger production. I checked the Paul Smith website for price and availability, but no information is currently available.

designboom: dining in 2015

Macefnew
designboom's 'dining in 2015' competition results are in and i am just floored.
the competition rules (i should know, i entered and then faltered to find time with travel, work, etc. to actually send in my entry) were to re-think and re-design the way we [will] dine: how we go about this activity at work, at home and during travel. there were other guidelines, such as sustainability and recycled materials and just how our eating habits (how, what, where) and the act of eating in general (with family, on the move, alone) may/may not change according to how the way we live may/may not change in the future. it was an awesome competition and brain-storm exercise (giuseppe and i came up with about 10 ideas while, go figure, cooking one night).
check out the winner(s) and also some honorable mentions and shortlisted entries...i can only imagine how fantastic the entries that didn't make it on this list were as well, it seems like everyone had their creative thinking cap on for this one. i am personally looking forward to many exciting and creative dining adventures in the future (and really cool things to buy for the kitchen in a few years)!

David Chipperfield Architects are awarded the Stirling prize for the Archive of Literature in Germany

Awards in Architecture tend to cause many discussions and arguments, much as they do in every other sector of the art world. This year's RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Stirling Award was no exception. Merely the fact that the building awarded was not built on English ground cause much controversy. But why should it? Is good architecture confined within borders? Of course not.

David Chipperfield won the UK’s most prestigious architecture award for the Archive of Modern Literature in Germany. A question asked is why can the UK produce architects but not architecture? Let us see some examples: Zaha Hadid did only overseas projects before getting a UK commission, Richard Rogers became famous in Paris with the Pompidou Centre. Last year the prize went to a building in Madrid. This year alone, four out of the six British short-listed entries were built outside the UK.

But enough about the arguments. Lets leave those to the committees and magazines. We have an awarded building to see!
The Archives are located in the German city of Marbach's scenic park, on top of a rock plateau overlooking the picturesque valley of the Neckar River. Displaying and archiving works of 20th century literature, notably the original manuscripts of Franz Kafka's ‘The Trial’ (which I recently read by coincidence!) and Alfred Döblin's ‘Berlin Alexanderplatz’, it provides panoramic views across the distant landscape.

The pavilion-like interiors of the building reveal themselves further as the visitor descends down through the display and archive spaces. Then he sees the dark timber-panelled exhibition galleries, illuminated only by artificial light due to the fragility and sensitivity of the works on display.

652_4_1000_chip_mus_of_mod_lit_5

The material concept is clearly defined: using solid materials (concrete, sandblasted reconstituted stone with limestone aggregate, limestone, wood, felt and glass) the rational architectural language is given a sensual physical presence. The archives opened in September 2006, constructed at a cost of  £7 million by Leonard Weiss GmbH. The engineers were Ingenieurgruppe Bauen. The total area is 3800 square meters.

In the words of David Chipperfield, " this building was an attempt to build a bridge between the public and the work of the institute". As we can see from the section above, the building fully takes advantage of the landscape, providing different views depending on the location of the viewer.

Homeheropic

The 'HomeHero' is a sleek, modern fire extinguisher that has won the 2007 International Design Excellence Award in Consumer Products. It is available exclusively at the Home Depot and since October is National Fire Safety Month this may be a good time to pick one up so you'll be prepared in the event your jack o' lantern gets a little unruly this Halloween.

Kattbank

I found this great product while flipping through ID Magazine the other day: the Kattbank. Form embraces function with this chic bench that doubles as a kitty litter box. I love cats, and this piece suggests a solution for the reason why we don't have one in our tiny 700 square foot house: no room for the litter box.

Kattbank also offers hand blown glass items, like this litter storage jar. It's all about making life's mundane details more beautiful.
