Riff Raff Kitchen Island: Mid Century Style from Wake the Tree Furniture Co.
Furniture & Lighting
Talk about mouth-watering. This handsome hand crafted kitchen island is mystifyingly called Riff Raff, but serves up a jolt of style that’s anything but. The Riff Raff Kitchen Island, designed and built by the Pennsylvania furniture company, Wake the Tree, is almost too fine for the kitchen, where spills and stains abound, but truth be told, it’ll make a tasty accent piece in any room.
Taking his cue from the Mid Century era’s penchant for mixing expert workmanship with unexpected dashes of color, Wake the Tree designer and furniture maker, Anthony Becker, has given Riff Raff the clean lines of a classic modernist storage piece, which he’s hand made from locally sourced black walnut, along with a pair of defining peg boards of bright yellow powder coated steel. An ample surface area for food prep, built-in hidden storage, and a long open shelf add up to a nice swath of room for showcasing and storing all sorts of kitchen paraphernalia—aka, yes, “riff raff.”
Located in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Wake the Tree Furniture Co. is a small American design studio that takes design and craftsmanship seriously. Founder and maker, Anthony Becker, the son of a woodworker, churns out simple, thoughtfully crafted modern furniture, each piece bearing the hallmarks off modernist sensibilities, and materials sourced from his native state. A portion of the company’s sales, it should be noted, are donated to Old-Growth Forest Network, an organization devoted to the preservation of America’s venerable forests.
