At London’s Mayfair Gallery, Contemporary Gold Jewelry by Ai Weiwei
Art & Design
Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has made a surprising detour into the fashion world with an elegant jewelry line, currently on view at London’s Mayfair Gallery. A collaboration with Mayfair founder Elisabetta Cipriani, the celebrated artist’s Rebar in Gold collection is far from showy, but appropriately sculptural, consisting only of a pair of slender gold bars in two sizes, each 24kt strip rendered so pliable as to be fashioned by the artist into a bespoke wrist-sized twirl. The wearer (if she dares) may then adjust Ai’s hand-applied shape as needed for a tighter or more comfortable wrist fitting.
Produced in a limited edition of 12, the Rebar in Gold bracelets, designed by Ai Weiwei, have their inception in the artist’s 2013 installation, Straight, a work consisting of 150 tons of rebar steel salvaged from the 2008 earthquake that devastated China’s Sichuan province. The detailed markings on the delicate gold bracelets mirror the markings on the massive steel rods that comprised Straight, an installation originally unveiled at the 2013 Venice Biennale, and now included in the artist’s career retrospective at London’s Royal Academy of Arts.
