Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek has created a new suite of contemporary wallpaper designs that reflect his continuing interest in fool-the-eye-textural motifs. Once again collaborating with NLXL, the Netherlands-based wallpaper design studio, Eek has unveiled Materials, a new collection of motifs which include variations of his famous Scrapwood Wallpaper series, as well as brand new designs that feature trompe l’oeil brick and marble surfaces. Eek, who’s made waste materials a cornerstone of his furniture designs, once again celebrates the esthetic of imperfection with his wood-based wallpaper series, while adding a few more man-made materials to his arsenal of photorealist wall coverings.

One of 8 new designs in Peter Hein Eek’s new Materials modern wallpaper range, Blue Scrapwood builds on the designer’s seminal 2011 Scrapwood Wallpaper collection, in which photographically reproduced images of paint-chipped, weathered wood planks managed to ingeniously estheticize discarded materials. Blue Scrapwood is a monochromatic variation that Eek says was serendipitous. “People ask me for a blue wallpaper all the time, so when these blue planks came in at the workshop, I knew we had to do it.”

Burnt Wood, which presents a drop-dead gorgeous expanse of ebony wood planks, leverages the expertise of Maarten Baas, the Dutch designer whose Smoke collection of coal-black wood furniture derived its dark patina from being burnt and then preserved in epoxy. “We decided we could not do this without the expertise of Maarten Baas,” says Eek, of a partnership which has yielded the strikingly morose, richly textured Burt Wood Wallpaper.

Faux marble tiles figure into Materials, the new collection of wall coverings by Piet Hein Eek and NLXL. “A lot of companies have made marble reproduction products, but never in the way we envisioned it. So we decided to give it a try,” says the designer. The result is Black Marble and White Marble, two designs that uncannily replicate grids of marble tiles in all their textural veiny details.

Exposed brick is given a glamorous new twist in Piet Hien Eek’s new wallpaper range, in which basic black paint and silvery grey enamel transform walls of pitted, battered bricks into unified monochromatic expanses. “In my factory in the Netherlands we have a lot of brick walls. Not the nice New York exposed brick kind, but the ugly kind. We decided to simply paint them black. I think this will look fantastic in any space.” No argument here.
