Renowned Danish lighting manufacturer, Louis Poulsen, has released a new pendant light with a deceptively simple outer form that belies its complicated inner structure. A creation of the Copenhagen-based designer, Øivind Slaatto, the ethereal Patera is a spherical contemporary pendant lamp, which Slaato has based on the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical number series most vividly illustrated in nature—in the symmetrically arranged seeds of a sunflower head, for instance, or the perfectly graduated shell of a nautilus.

In creating Patera, Øivind Slaatto, admits to finding inspiration in the designs of the late Poul Henningsen, the great Danish lighting designer whose collaboration with Louis Poulsen dates back to 1927, and whose myriad lighting designs remain the heart of the company’s catalogue. Henningsen, who may fairly be called the father of modern lighting design, made elegant, innovative modern lamps his trademark, designing shades of precisely arranged, overlapping elements that managed to disperse warm, nuanced light, miraculously devoid of glare.

Approximately two feet in diameter, Patera’s magic lies in the intricate inner workings of its no-frills ball shape. As the designer explains, “At first glance, it seems to be just a white, perforated ball, but closer inspection reveals its detailed design featuring a host of circles, angles and holes.” The meticulous positioning of each inner ‘cell’ ensures that the light source hits the internal surface material at an optimal series of angles, dispersing light evenly, while keeping glare firmly at bay. Functionality aside, the decorative Fibonacci effect also presents Patera as an ever-changing modern pendant lamp, subtly altered, and wholly unique from every angle.

Pantera’s exceedingly simple form, hand composed from a translucent synthetic material, was a concerted effort by the designer to create a visually refined, but intrinsically versatile, lighting model to complement almost any interior scheme or room—what Slaato describes as “…a light that unifies the space and makes any room a more human place to spend time in.” We’d call that a mission accomplished.
