Art & Craft: Plywood Print Stools from Piet Hein Eek & Rijksmuseum

Art & Design

Plywood Print StoolArt and craft collide, quite literally, in the first non-wallpaper product series from the Dutch design lab NLXL. Designer Piet Hein Eek, whose Scrapwood Wallpaper collection for NLXL marked a watershed moment for the company, has completed a suite of plywood stools imbued with iconic images of art from the permanent collection of Holland’s Rijksmuseum.

The Dutch national museum’s collaboration with the designer has yielded the Plywood Print Stool collection of 9 stools, each crafted from unfinished plywood, and bearing a seat emblazoned with one of 9 approved masterworks by revered Dutch artists, including Rembrandt and Van Gogh. The stools are to be shipped flat-packed for simple self-assembly.

Eek, for whom sustainability is a major design ethos, admits that the Plywood Print Stool project is a direct result of what’s possible in this technologically-rich age. “This product can only exist through today’s techniques: CNC wood cutting machines and wood enabled printers. I thought it would be a great idea to combine these innovations with century old Dutch masters from the Rijksmuseum collection.”Plywood Print StoolPlywood Print StoolPlywood Print StoolVia NLXL

Incredible masterpiece, indeed. I intend to apply same artistic concept in our designs. Great innovation using simple, yet classic stools.
