Carl Hansen & Søn have just released the CH88 Chair, a 1955 prototype design by Hans J. Wegner that had never previously been put into production. In observing Wegner’s 100th birthday, the danish manufacturer, whose recent observances of Wegner milestones have included handsome collaborations with fashion designer Paul Smith and textile manufacturer Maharam, have chosen to introduce an exceedingly refined and versatile Wegner chair model to a new generation of design enthusiasts. A rare wood-and-metal design by Wegner—whose mastery over wood is legendary—the CH88 features a steel frame, oval wooden seat, and exquisitely sculptural steam-bent back. Adding versatility to the original design, Carl Hansen & Son’s stackable version of the chair—introduced earlier this year at the Stockholm Furniture Fair—is being made available in a gorgeous array of colors, wood choices, and metal finishes, expanding its range of contemporary applications.
