The Nativity, in Abstraction

Modern Decor

emilievoirin-minimalnativityset-04Taking the polar opposite tack of literal Nativity Scenes is French artist and designer Émilie Voirin, who has created a thoroughly original, purely conceptual alternative. Realized in beech wood, each character in the Minimal Nativity Set, including the baby Jesus, is represented not in human or animal form, but rendered as a square block, identifiable only by the name emblazoned across. “The characters have lost their features and colors for a modern appearance that could appeal to both believers and atheists,” says the artist, thus, “giving free rein to people’s imagination.” Traditionalists may be scandalized, but anyone given to pure abstractions will have reason to rejoice.emilievoirin-minimalnativityset-02emilievoirin-minimalnativityset-03emilievoirin-minimalnativityset-05
