Design Focus: Sputnik Chandeliers

Architecture & Interiors

The enduring fascination with the Sputnik chandelier, that iconic decorative symbol of the ’60s Space Race, may best be summarized in its power to express the past, the present, and the future in a single glamorous package. For the Sputnik—essentially a catchall name assigned to a light fixture with radiating, starburst-like elements—has the uncanny knack for strongly invoking a bygone era, while looking both utterly contemporary and entirely futuristic. No wonder, then, we never get tired of looking at Sputniks. No wonder, then, once we catch a glimpse, we can’t turn away.Screen shot 2013-11-08 at 10.17.27 AMImage Credit (top); Image Credit (above)sputnik10Image CreditSputnik+BedroomImage Credititem10.rendition.slideshowHorizontal.11_shining_momentImage credit417_4_7gImage Credit92d53789b7d1bd1c-brass-sputnik-tangle-saarinen-dining-white-roomImage credit
