A Second Turn for Hans Wegner’s Swivel Chair

2013 was a good year for Mid-Century Modern chair reprisals. Bygone designs by Gio Ponti, Richard Neutra, and Arne Jacobsen, among others, were untethered from estate and museum archives and given new life by designing manufacturers. Danish brand PP Møbler is the latest, with a reissue of Hans J. Wegner’s Swivel Chair, an office chair first introduced in 1955. A preposterously artful concoction, comprised of tubular steel, leather, and a slab of sensuously twisted solid wood, the ergonomically-sensitive Swivel Chair “presents huge challenges for the joiner, the upholsterer and the blacksmith,” says PP Møbler. No such challenges, thankfully, face Wegner’s breathless admirers.
