A Leica Photo Finish for Ive and Newson
Camera shy is one term that can’t be applied to Jonathan Ive. Apple’s VP of Industrial Design (i.e., the guy who gets the lion’s share of credit for turning Apple products into eye candy) has a slew of outside projects along with glamorous friends in high places.
Ive and fellow industrial design superstar, Marc Newson, have collaborated on a new one-of-a-kind camera for the German camera brand Leica comprised of “nearly 1000 prototype parts and more than 725 hours of manufacturing time.” To be auctioned off for charity on November 23, proceeds from the sale of the camera will benefit (RED), the organization founded by rock star Bono to combat AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. Says Ive, “Designing this very special camera for the (RED) Auction has been a privilege for myself and Marc.”
