Alvar Aalto’s Eternal Shelf Life
Furniture & Lighting
If ever there’s any doubt that something designed in 1936 can look utterly contemporary in 2013, let Alvar Aalto dispel it again and again. The Finnish architect’s age-defying output of Artek armchairs, tables and lighting are familiar enough, but his innate sense for reductive design was also applied to a range of less celebrated Artek accessories—including these wall-mounted shelves. Exhibiting elements of Aalto’s penchant for marrying utilitarian simplicity with signature bent wood flourishes, the Artek Wall Shelf collection, like most of Aalto’s work, seems to have no expiration date.
