A New Cloud From Berndnaut Smilde
Art & Design
The Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde has been beguiling audiences for a few years with a series of installations, captured in photographs, which depict ghostly, suspended clouds in empty rooms. His latest project is Nimbus Green Room, a room at the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center that Smilde refers to as ‘kitsch’ for its attempt at replicating a room at Versailles, but which nevertheless offers a stunning backdrop for his newest cloud.
With a smoke machine and carefully calibrated humidity levels, Smilde creates just the right conditions for the clouds to form, and to be photographed before dissipating—but doesn’t actually take the photographs himself, preferring to work with local photographers. Nimbus Green Room was photographed by San Francisco photographer RJ Muna.
