New Zealand designer David Trubridge has cornered the market on intricately constructed, dazzlingly beautiful pendant lights comprised of interlocking bamboo modules. His latest creation, Manuka, debuts this weekend during New York Design Week. Named after the flower of a New Zealand tree, Manuka is an especially large hanging ball (the smaller of the two sizes is over 2.5 feet in diameter) comprised of interlocking five-petaled and six-petaled bamboo flowers. A series of LED lights cradled within the ball cast an all-over pattern of shadows across the surrounding walls and ceilings. Says the designer, “With the light shining at all different directions from within the fitting, the projected patterns seem to overlap one another. It looks like wallpaper.”
