Applying new meaning to the term 3D glasses is British designer Ron Arad, who has used the occasion of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan this week to introduce a new line of eye glasses created entirely through 3D printing technology.
“The brand wanted to advertise the fact that it’s printed,” said Arad, “but I said let’s not go on about it. But it’s printed. It’s the first pair of glasses that I know about that is one piece of material; it’s monolithic. It’s polyamide.” Which is to say, the frames are made from a synthetic powder, molded via the 3D printing process, into a single, continuous piece, requiring no hardware or extraneous parts.
Each of the seven styles is named after a station on the London Underground, and available in a variety of colors, and as sunglasses, too.
