It may be a little early to proclaim Ro, Spanish designer Jaime Hayón’s new armchair for Fritz Hansen, the 21st Century’s answer to Arne Jacobsen’s Egg chair, but when a lounge chair looks this good from every angle, we have to deem it a contender.

Ro, which translates as tranquility in Danish, debuted at Milan earlier this month, and couldn’t be more aptly named. Its gently undulating curves form an enveloping steel-framed outer shell, much like the Saarinen Womb Chair, and the flaring upper portion invokes Hans Wegner’s Wingback chair—a pair of Nordic comparisons we suspect Hayón won’t mind—while separate cushions for head, torso and seat beckon invitingly.

Eschewing angles for curves, Hayón has imbued the generously-sized Ro (Hayón calls it a chair-and-a-half) with soothing corners that extend down to the rounded legs, and a softness that’s echoed in the exquisite suite of 9 (mostly) pale colors. Ro owners need only look forward to one enviable dilemma: deciding which angle best shows off the chair’s curvaceous profile.
