Just in time for the growing season comes Jody Morlock’s floral series, a collection of expressively illustrated flowering stems rendered on marked up pages of old ledgers. The New York-based Morlock, whose prolific portfolio includes mixed media sculptures and acrylics on canvas, is one of many contemporary artists who has effectively mined the richness of the vintage text-based page for compositions that are at once original and nostalgic. Straddling a line between preparatory sketches and clinically accurate botanical prints, Morlock’s flowers manage to be both bold and delicate, abstract and richly detailed. And, rendered on a canvas of anonymously marked yellowed pages, something unmistakably hers.
