Art & Design
The next time you’re in New York, and find yourself baffled by its signage, take heart. That unintelligible parking sign may, in fact, be part of Rap Quotes, an ongoing project by the artist Jay Shells. Shells, who has shown a fondness for street signage in the past, has recreated very authentic-looking street signs using rap lyrics which contain references to actual New York City streets—145thand Broadway; Malcolm X Boulevard and Gates Avenue; Flatbush Junction—and has been laboriously placing them at their corresponding streets. Yes, we agree it’s probably wrecking havoc with tourists (and not a few locals), but it’s also pretty subversive art.
