Not every attempt at upcycling—repurposing detritus into something loftier—is an aesthetic victory. But the French design studio FX Balléry has given it a good go. PVC pipes in a range of configurations have been painted in sumptuous colors, heavily lacquered, and turned into a glossy modern vase series. True, they still look like PVC pipes, but they are skillfully beautified ones, and certainly fit the “spontaneous, unexpected,” intent of the designers; and at more than $100 a pop, a sleek and colorful reminder that industrial chic doesn’t come cheaply.
