“Imitation can also be inspiration,” says Renny Ramakers, the founder of Droog, the experimental Dutch design collective. And to prove it, Droog went to Shenzhen, China, “the epicenter of copycat culture,” to do some imitating of their own. The result is The New Original, a project aimed at initiating dialogue about the future of Chinese design by showing that “the process of copying is clearly more than just mere replication—it can be a real driver in innovation.”
Droog’s 26 re-imagined objects, including this innovative remake of a classic cast iron Chinese teapot, will be unveiled tomorrow, and will be on exhibit in Guangzhou through April 9th.
