Is it art, or is it furniture? Giving new meaning to the term fine furniture is the impossibly slender Chiuet table prototype by Korean designer Seung Jun Jeong. Designed in 2010, and winner of several concept design awards, this is one of those table-as-art pieces that looks suspiciously impractical and even ever-so-slightly dangerous (isn’t that long leg jutting out a bit too aggressively?).
Working with steel, Jeong seems to have taken more cues from architects (the table top looks almost cantilevered) and Alexander Calder’s stabiles than from any furniture designer’s output, and maybe he’s on to something. All that remains to be seen is whether Chiuet ever makes it out of concept stage and into the market.
