Nostalgia for the way things used to be—or at the very least, the way things used to look—can fairly be explained in one word: quality. Prior to the advent of mass production, the thinking goes, stuff was made to last a good while, and, thus, made with a great deal more care.
No wonder, then, that makers of small-batch products continue to show a fondness for wrapping their goods in packaging meant to invoke a time before a throwaway culture began to value quantity over quality—and this is a good thing for package designers. As evidenced by these beautifully presented items by the apothecary company, Barr-Co, the best designers find ways to mine the past with refreshingly modern results.
