Diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in May of this year before her 45th birthday, artist Wendy Wagner has had five brain surgeries since. Thursday, January 24th, she’ll have an opening reception for her new show premiering at the Austin-based Women & Their Work gallery for her show “LOOK TO THE LEFT” which she began early in 2012 before finding out about the tumor. She has suffered a complete left sight deficit due to the removal of the tumor. As a result of the removal of the tumor, she has lost peripheral vision on the left side of both eyes, thus the show’s title, “Look to the Left”.
She embraces innocence and a sort of make-believe world using a myriad of techniques, from painting, drawing, ceramic, soft sculpture and animation. Inspired by childhood, pets, family and fantasy, her pieces reflect enchantment with the world, and a strong sense of fantasy life entangled with real life.
“LOOK TO THE LEFT,” will run from January 24 to March 14, 2013. Opening reception is Thursday, January 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. Women & Their Work is located at 1710 Lavaca Street, Austin, TX 78701.
