Maybe it’s the endless stream of flawless pictures flooding our daily lives. Maybe it’s the knowledge that the images that wow us are not necessarily what they appear to be. Whatever the reason, to come upon something rendered by hand is to recognize a certain kind of authenticity.
In the most modern of cities, alongside LED giant screens and Photoshopped billboard ads, hand-painted signs and markings—like these, in New York City—still fill an important space in a visual culture saturated with digital perfection. But rather than wallowing in nostalgia, hand crafted images deliver plenty of modern graphic panache—and a bit of soul, to boot.
