Judd and Rothko would be proud. We’re really digging the bold bright looks of artist Calvin Ross Carl. He definitely tends toward strong geometric patterns that are familiar to most people, and he definitely uses bright, arresting colors that stop a viewer in their tracks. But these aren’t super simple compositions without any depth; it’s kind of their flatness that gives them a lot of sophistication.
“Calvin Ross Carl’s work seeks the beautiful and phenomenal in the mundaneness of the American working-class experience. Carl reinterprets common materials of the American work environment through the lens of formal aesthetics, in order to assess and transcend the material’s original cultural purpose and worth. Carl now lives and works in Portland, Oregon.” More.
