Be sane, clean, happy and modern in 2012: 4 things to do today for the best year ever

Categories: DIY + How To

Welcome to 2012. It’s our first post (of many, we hope!) and it’s a DIY/How-to post. If there’s one thing that we learned from last year it’s that you loyal blog readers are ravenous for modern ways for you to personally improve your home—and we’re more than happy to oblige you with as many awesome modern DIY projects as we can stuff into this blog. But we also want to share with you some modern ideas, tips and hints to help you create a better, more modern (how ever you define that word) life and home. In that spirit, here are 4 things to do today to keep you sane, healthy, organized, happy, modern and cool all this new year.

Clear out anything that isn’t serving you anymore. Streamline it all. Identify and hit your hot spots—those places in the house that weigh on you; that nag you in your head with “I should really clean that out” every time you walk by it. Throw away, donate or do whatever with the stuff you haven’t touched in a year but for gosh sakes DO NOT keep it. Don’t keep it for just in case. Don’t keep it for well I spent money on it. Don’t keep it if it doesn’t make your life better. You’d be surprised how this physical catharsis can really lead to a mental and emotional catharsis as well.

Come up with a plan to keep the house clean for real this  time. One of our favorite posts published on a blog anywhere last year was Apartment Therapy’s “How To Clean Your House in 20 Minutes a Day for 30 Days.” It supplies everything in list form, including a rocking schedule, that will allow you to keep a clean, healthy home in a less time-consuming way. At the very least you can try it for a month!

Finally get those DIY projects done this year with a master list you make TODAY Make a master list of your DIY needs and your free weekends available this year, and reasonably set up a schedule that will allow you to tackle some projects you’ve always wanted to do. We know we posted some awesome ones we wanted to stick in our place last year, stay in touch with all of our smartly-curated modern DIY projects.

Get to know your style more; be authentic to you. As some of you may know I also moonlight on Apartment Therapy, and I get to do house tours of local Austin residents. One tour I shot in late 2011 really resonated with me: the young couple moved into a subdivision of modernly-designed homes, and the wife at first set out filling their modern architecture house with “modern” furniture, art and colors—things that she thought should be in a home with architecture like theirs. But it wasn’t their style. Eventually she just started filling the home with things that struck her in her gut, that felt right to her, were things that she loved. And you know what? The house looked awesome, even with two different styles living under one roof. Why? Because it was an authentic look.

Take time this year to peruse different inspiring websites to finally pin down your look. Not the look you think would fit the architecture of your house. Not the look you think you should have. Not the look you feel stuck in because when you first started buying furniture you weren’t in touch with your style. Flip through 2Modern and start bookmarking things that strike you. Make an awesome mood board on Olioboard without thinking too hard and see what the end result is. Follow us on Pinterest and start making your own boards to explore your style. 2012 is the year of you, and we can’t wait to see how you change your home and your life!

Did you have any house or home-related resolutions this year? We’d love to hear them. If anything…if you comment here on this post you’ll have a public record of your resolution that might just motivate you to keep it!

  1. Great, I just cleared out some old stuff in my room. Thanks for the nudge!

  2. I’m totally on the same page after putting Christmas decor away I started cleaning drawers and closets and then the bigger items in rooms that have no real purpose or that was not getting used. I feel so liberated and the cleanliness made my home which has a tradition look feel more “modern” to me and a fresh coat of paint doesn’t hurt either. My resolution is to not purchase anything I don’t absolutely love and if I do love it I will return to make the purchase after some thought.
