DIY: Modern barn door for $40

DIY + How To

How we missed this when it first appeared on Apartment Therapy back in February is a mystery, but what’s not a mystery is why anyone would want this in their home: modern sliding/barn doors are an awesome alternative to regular doors-in-a-frame or even just casement openings; they add an instant level of architectural interest and are cool and functional, to boot! This Apartment Therapy contributor claims to have figured out how to make it for $40.

At that price, you’ll be able to make a few for your home, and because this is a custom door for your place, you really are in control of its size, color, heck even shape (maybe not shape). There are plenty of instructions, photos and a materials list, but be sure also to check out the comments; a few AT readers shared their tips and ideas so you get not just one DIY project in this tutorial, you get a few! Make your own here.

What do you think about this sliding door project? Do you think it looks cool…like something made for $40 or something more expensive? Would you ever try something like this in your home? Comment and let us know, for gosh sakes!

we did it about 5yrs ago, for a loft in our home. it worked perfectly for a half wall in our loft bedroom. we used beadboard panels over frame for more of a farmhouse look. i would definitely do again.

Neat! Do you remember how much it cost you at the time? And did you guys just figure out how to do it yourselves or did you reference a tutorial or project?
