Mind Blown: Transparent Concrete

Categories: Architecture + Interiors, Modern Decor + Objects

There are just some materials’ physical properties you take for granted: cotton will be soft, wood floors hard and concrete light-blocking. Back up on that last one. Apparently, concrete can now transmit (albeit not a ton, but still) light! Whoa! Mind blown!

How are they achieving this feat of building material marvel? From the company: “Litracon® is a combination of optical fibers and fine concrete. Due to the small size of the fibres, they blend into concrete becoming a component of the material like small pieces of aggregate. In this manner, the result is not only two materials – glass in concrete – mixed, but a third, new material, which is homogeneous in its inner structure and on its main surfaces as well.” Well color us AMAZED. Imagine the implications! We wonder if it’s got the same strength and sturdiness as standard concrete? Check out more info and photos in the post on Freshhome.

What do you think about transparent concrete? How would you use it in your home? Let us know!

  1. That is just plain insane. Love it. Not sure what i’d use it for but a whole house built from this would be awesome.
