Tornado Relief: HERO Housing

The damage from Alabama’s tornadoes is staggering. Don’t let the lacking news stories fool you: it’s still a mess out there and the folks there still need help. We came across an organization that looks to be doing some really great immediate help and plans to help get these folks back into homes in the near future.

HERO “works as a catalyst for community development in areas of the Alabama Black Belt to end rural poverty. As a non-profit housing resource center, HERO provides community resources and housing education.” You can find out more information here, or learn how you can donate here.

“The damage from Alabama’s tornadoes is staggering: 5 people & 42 homes lost, 17 homes uninhabitable and dozens more homes damaged.”

You think those numbers are staggering?! The figures stated in this post are a gross understatement of the real damage done by these tornadoes. Where did these low-ball numbers come from?

At least 238 died in Alabama. More than 5,000 homes destroyed in Jefferson County alone, thousands more elsewhere. Please, please correct the information so that people understand how much assistance is needed. If you need help pulling statistics, I’d be glad to help.

Apologies Bruce! I took that information from the website. I will take the numbers out!
