5 Modern Chairs: The New Classics

Modern Decor

Modern chairs are a passion for many designers and design enthusiasts alike. There is something about a brilliantly designed modern chair that evokes a sense of awe. For years, a staple in modern décor has been chairs such as the classic Barcelona, Tulip and Panton. While we love these chairs for their steadfastness and design genius, there is a new generation of modern chairs appearing on the scene and we think these have all the possibility and creativity to become modern design staples in their own right. Here are five chairs we think make the grade:

Anonimus Sedia
Talk about form and function in a gorgeous package, Ron Arad’s Anonimus Sedia chair is that and more. Intentionally warped birch plywood in a natural stain set atop a frame of flat steel bar and aluminum ball feet makes for a modern chair with staying power.

Blu Dot Buttercup Rocker on 2Modern
The gentlemen over at Blu Dot have been wowing the modern design scene with their retro-styled furniture at prices affordable by the masses. The ButterCup Rocker gives us a modern way to rock without the look of a traditional rocker. Ingenious and beautiful in bent plywood of rift-sawn white oak and walnut and a brushed stainless steel base.

The Mint Chair
Reminiscent of George Nelson’s mid-century Marshmallow chair, the Mint chair by Monica Graffeo entices with multiple circles which have an apparent “fluffiness” to them. The molded plastic body atop thin stainless steel legs makes these chairs light and easy to maneuver, perfect for dining indoors or out.

Transparent Chair
Transparent Chair designed by Marco Pocci and Claudio Dondoli, for Pedrali has the feel of a traditional wing back with the modern twist of molded polycarbonate plastic all rolled into one incredible chair. Its sturdy construction allows for outdoor use and looks equally as attractive by the pool as it does in a modern or contemporary living room.

Heritage Stacking Chair
Philippe Starck’s sexy modern stackable chair designed for Emeco is a design epiphany combining 80% recycled aluminum with a style that can go anywhere. Enviro-conscience and amazing design make this chair a true classic.

My favorite office chairs from the post are the Anonimus Sedia style. I really like that wood look. I bet there is a way to fit these with casters to add some mobility. I can see these really setting the tone in a beach side modern office or eco-friendly business.
