Modern Cottage Renovation

Architecture & Interiors

1 I ran across Juli Daoust and John Baker’s modern cottage renovation on Flickr (that wellspring of inspiration) and was absolutely blown away.  You can read about the whole thing on their blog KITKA, but for now, just sit back and enjoy the beauty of this Scandinavian Modern style cottage from two ardent DIYers.

A little bit of back story, from Juli:

Back in the 70s, my parents bought a cute set of cottages set in a busy
beachy area on Georgian Bay. On a tight budget, they made improvements
such as blowing out the porch, installing California style windows,
building a walk out deck and eventually installing an open concept
kitchen. And then nothing happened for a very long time. The years came
and went and we were still sitting in the Ogden’s living room set (the
Ogdens were the previous owners for several generations). In 2004 I
inherited the cottage when my father passed away. I was totally
unprepared for the responsibility and the place fell into a bit of a
state. My mom tried her best to keep it from going totally under and
two years ago we didn’t even open. So when I introduced John to the
cottage last summer, it was ripe for the picking. And we were so on the
same design page, it was a relative snap to make it the space we’d only
ever dreamed about.  So enjoy our hard work—we hope that it inspires you!

4 My favorite thing about this whole renovation is their use of plywood throughout.  It’s inexpensive, practical, and well, just plain cool looking.  Check out the pics below to see what I mean.

9 Aaaand a little “Before” action so you can get an idea of just how much this place has changed:

10 Incredible, right??  I, for one, am in love with this cottage!  Juli and John did an AMAZING job with this renovation.  Truly inspiring!  Be sure to read more about the whole thing here.

That site has great ideas and very resourceful in terms of furniture inventions. it could save more space in your house.I love
this! It’s the perfect mix of modern and natural – the rich stone hues meeting the clear glass to work so well with all kinds of
style. I like to mix and match my furniture and decor, and this look will work seamlessly with my matched, mismatched style.

Wowza, thanks for the lovely post about our cottage. It’s been months since we’ve been up there but we can’t wait to open up again in the spring!
