Clever Chair

The first time I saw the Mieserolo chair roll up into a bundle I thought it was a trick.  I was wrong.  It was much better than a trick.  It was a real work of design brilliance.

When its not being use, the chair appears to be a rolled up bundle of wood slats held by a ribbon of flexible plastic at each end.  But when the bundle of wood slats are unrolled they climb up over each other and lock into place.  Each wood slat is precisely shaped so that they fit together to create a sinuous, segmented curve, where the weight of all the slats press against each other like stones in an arch.

The result is a free standing wood chair without any back legs.  The Mieserolo chair cantilevers over itself so that it seems to defy gravity.  That is the genius of Serbian designer, Uros Vitas, who used the structural strength of the curved shapes against each other.  The fact that the chair rolls back up into a small, light weight, bundle adds another layer of functionality to the design.

  1. brilliant!! It’s unlike all the other contraptions of the concept, which are whether metal-frame or bent plywood, making it possible to be manufactured anywhere with a router CNC and two bands of flexible plastic. simply brilliant, congratulations to neighbour serbian from romania ;) (may be you’s like to check my blog at http://www.perfectcube.wordpress.com)
