Gil Mares Invites Contemplation

At first glance, you are not sure what it is.  Abstract Painting?  Photograph?  Both?  Photographer Gil Mares captures the sea’s paint on its metal canvas.  He takes you from the macro to the micro view of ships hulls, revealing the beauty of their mysterious history.  Each ship’s individual signature is formed by its experiences on the open water and in the harbor.  

Mares’ images confine the context of the work.   The colors are striking.  Who would have thought that rust combined with sea water could make such a rainbow?  The dynamics of physics or is it beauty of chemistry?  We see it in passing, but Mares’ work brings the viewer up-close and personal to the details.   Echoing the effect of the subject’s metal canvas, Mares sometimes applies the image to an aluminum canvas.    The line between the ship’s  hulls blur as we see it as a vibrant, modern, abstract painting.
