Download, print, cut, and fold. These are the only instructions you will need to assemble the free “toys” offered on paper toy web sites such as cubecraft and nicepapertoys. Though these objects are described as toys, they are really carefully designed paper sculptures submitted by guest artists such as Marshall Alexander. Designed to be assembled with tabs and slots, these creations do not need glue or any other material besides the 8.5″ x11″ sheet of paper used to print out the images. Paper toys have a growing following of avid collectors and many of the artists have their own web sites, such as Jason Harlan’s boxpunx. Be warned once you poke your nose into this niche of the design world it can become quite addicting. Thankfully 8.5″ x 11″ paper is still cheap.
