House of the Future

Future_house_ms_hp
The House of the Future is coming back to Disneyland. It will cost 15 million and have 5000 sq ft of floor space. Inside will reside actors from an imaginary family, preparing for their vacation to China. The house will be outfitted with all the gadgets that are thought to be incorporated into our daily lives in the future (ie: automatic lighting and thermostats, advanced audio/video systems, and computerized everything). With Microsoft, HP and LifeWare sponsoring the project, you'd expect nothing less.
The first House of the Future attraction (pictured above) ran from 1957 until 1967 and depicted how we would live in 1986. It was equipped with a microwave oven, electric toothbrushes, a big screen color tv and a pushbutton speakerphone.
You can check out the new, futuristic residence starting in May at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

That sounds really cool, especially since they correctly predicted how we would live in 1986 (I would guess by your article because I was 2 yrs old at the time). I just can't figure out why the family is preparing for a trip to China. I mean, really? China? Why not Japan, where all of the this stuff exists today or will by the end of the year? Just pick a better destination than China.

I think the idea is that we will be vacationing in the far east as easily/readily as we currently vacation in Europe. Since the US is doing so much business with China, it's only natural that tourism will follow suit and if the Euro continues to remain as strong against the dollar, people will look more at taking trips to Eastern Europe, South America, India and The Far East to get more bang for their buck.
