Mater is a Copenhagen based luxury housewares company founded in 2007 that has been praised for their commitment to ethical workplace conditions. Mater is a strong balance between ethics and aesthetics. I, admittedly, look at the aesthetics before I even consider how the piece is made. I just want that gut reaction. Mater certainly delivers.

Folded Tray by Rene and Sach is a thick piece of sheet aluminum which is pressed, cut, and honed into its final shape.

Sideon Cutlery by Jens Martin Skibs is a stainless steel cutlery collection inspired by the Japanese Oki table setting.

Probably my favorite piece in the collection is the InOut Pitcher by Todd Bracher which is simply one of the most elegant pitchers I’ve ever seen.
The work speaks for itself, but ethically, the site of manufacturing, which include China, India, and Vietnam, are required to receive periodic audits by Mater as well as follow strict worker protocols and protections. This is a well received commitment by Mater, but as wonderful as all of this sounds, why is this not the baseline decision made by all companies that manufacture abroad? I hope that someday it would be.

Nice piece !!!
