Is Gold The New Black?

Over the past year at DesignCrack.com, I've made it my business to cover beautiful and high-concept design objects. Basically, what I do is dig through all the international design shows, student exhibitions, and design forums to find the most fabulous objects of desire. After I find the objects I simply display them on the site for people's amusement, but I rarely try to tie the threads together to come up with outstanding trends for the year. This type of speculation I save for the 2Modern Blog. So, what trends have I found in this past year, you ask? One big one has been gold. Everything seems to be made in gold this past year or so. So much so that I speculate that gold is the new black. Here are just a few of the insanely gold items I've written about this past year:

Could you believe a gold retainer necklace? The trend: cast meaningful objects from your childhood to be preserved forever. The only thing I can think that I would want cast in gold from my adolescent years can't be shown on this blog. It certainly wasn't my retainer.

A bit more naughty would be the gold plated vibrator by Citizen:Citizen for those design hounds looking for some  pleasure.

Weddingpills

This year, I found not one, but two gold pills available: The Wedding Pill by Ted Noten and Golden Pills by Tobias Wong. Wong's pills are a bit childish and are simply meant to allow you to poop a golden log, whereas Ted Noten'd Wedding pills or more of a meaningful ritual added to a couple's nuptuals.

Of course, there is always the plain old gold bar doorstop designed by Arik Levy which says to anyone who might notice, "This guy's loaded".

This golden ceramic juicer by  Giuliano Lacchetti is a great example of bringing a little golden luxury into your everyday chores like cooking.

And if all this weren't enough gold for you, then you can end your day by cuddling up on your very own golden sofa. Ahhhh.

NEW RICH

Mass products meet luxury

In their latest collection, Big-game questions the meaning of accessories and offers new alternatives to jewellery. This series of objects entitled NEW RICH results from the confrontation between mass products and luxury.

When gold replaces plastic, democratic and functional objects become exclusive in a subtle way.

Weve picked standard, universal products, and replaced a part of each object by an equivalent in gold, explains Elric Petit. We love the shrewd blend between the down-to-earth functionalism of mass-products and the ultimate precious material: gold

The scenography of Big-games exhibition in Kln reflects this ambiguity as it is inspired by black-market peddlers. The black suitcase that serves as a display stand for the objects is regularly carried around the fair grounds to meet visitors.

Why buy a luxury lighter when you can have a deluxe BIC lighter? asks Grgoire Jeanmonod.

Pimp your Bic pen, Apple headphones, Bic lighter, Swatch watch, brummagem jewellery and drawing pins with the New Rich collection!
