Wall Art That Pops: BellaMuse

Wall Art That Pops: BellaMuse
By: Holly Becker, decor8

2modern

I'm a big fan of bold graphic prints, especially on white walls with very sleek frames in teak or even something minimal, like a glass clip frame. A few prints with pizzazz can bring  an entire space together, adding just the right amount of punch to lend personality, YOUR personality, and a feeling of warmth to the space.  If you're color shy, a print can help break you out of the 'neutrals' that you've been living with.  Not sure how to add color into your home? Start small. A kitchen is a nice place to begin. Opt for tangerine, yellow and/or lime hues, great for the kitchen or dining room areas because these colors are known for evoking a sense of good health, energy, and cleanliness. You want to experience these feelings in your cooking quarters anyway, so why not bring in feel-good colors and see what results!

Where to Find Modern Prints - Stationery?

If you're at all inspired by graphics, you must feel lost in a glorious maze of color when you surf online for stationery these days. The sheer volume of jaw-dropping designers who have hopped on the card making bandwagon is sometimes overwhelming. As a writer, I can't tell you how many submissions I get each week asking me to write about stationery. Okay, I can. Oodles. However, like most of you, I'm looking for designs that pop. They must be different from the heap. They have to say Va-va-va-voom. They need to possess that certain something, one cannot put their finger on what it is, but you just know it when you see it. When I spotted BellaMuse, it wasn't just the designs that caught me, but the fact that they venture outside of card-making...

BellaMuse is one that stands out, for her cards are the perfect combination of bold and beautiful, perky colors, lush font types and always tasteful.  However, since this is a design blog, and 2Modern wants you to dress up your home in style, we're not going to discuss greeting cards. We're talking prints for the wall. BellaMuse creates giclee + silkscreen graphics, affordable droolworthy objects of art that you'll love to frame and display in your decked out 2Modern space.

Boring wall need a pick-me-up? Head to BellaMuse online. Their silkscreens are limited editions, printed by hand, signed and numbered by the artist, Alicia Peck. They'll set you back only around $275 each. If you're on a tight budget, you should consider the print collection, instead. These babies add pep to your pad,  using the giclee printing processs, they'll fit standard size frames. Best of all, they're available in a slew of sizes and mats and comfortably priced between $35-$165.

Psst: If you plan to be in NYC anytime soon, BellaMuse has an art stand on weekends in the heart of SOHO on the south east corner of West Broadway @ Spring Street. Click here for directions. (images from bellamuse)

Cosmos

The popular Cosmos Floor Lamp is now offered in 10 new wood veneer color options. The semi-transparent natural and reconstructed wood veneers give a soft glow to your room. Modern Boston

2Modern Design Talk is taking you on a little tour across the United States, looking for the best in modern lifestyle resources by major metropolitan city. We are starting with Seattle and zigzagging our way to Boston. If you have any suggestions for our directory, which we will be constantly improving and adding, please let us know by providing comments to the posts.

Modern Boston + Cambridge, MA
By: Holly Becker, decor8

Print this out on your next trip to Boston, you'll be sure to return home with fond memories, great photos, lots of fresh finds, and an incentive to return! When you arrive, take a duck tour as soon as you can - educational, fun, and really helps you learn your way around our beautiful city as quick and painless as possible. You'll love it.

Boston_becker1Remember, when you're in Boston looking for modern design, think Beacon Hill, Newbury Street and the South End. Just over the Charles River, also hit Cambridge - home to Harvard Square and MIT. You can access all areas via the "T", our subway system. It's wicked easy to get around here, and by the way, we say wicked a lot, along with pahk instead of park and cah instead of car. But, with so many transplants moving in, our beautiful Boston accent isn't as obvious as it once was, but if you do come across someone who doesn't seem to pronounce the letter R, you know you've met a true native.  Those are the ones to ask for directions!

I suggest you begin your journey in Beacon Hill, working your way over to Newbury Street (stop by Cheers and visit the Boston Public Garden, home of the swan boats, on your journey) and after shopping Newbury, have someone point you to Commonwealth Avenue. Great street for browsing brownstones and experiencing Boston charm. Marlborough Street is another favorite of mine, runs parallel to Comm. Ave.  Many photo opportunities. After seeing how the locals live (this area is called the Back Bay for your information), walk back over to Newbury Street until you find Dartmouth Street. It's pretty easy to navigate this area since the streets are alphabetized. Dartmouth Street spills you directly out into Copley Square. To the right is the Boston Public Library. To the left, Trinity Church and the looming presence of the John Hancock Tower (great observatory, too!). If you walk straight and bear right after the library, you'll enter the Copley Place Mall which eventually leads you the Shops at Prudential Center. Lots to see and eat in these huge shopping malls! Afterwards, the nearby South End awaits you for lots of modern design jewels. (More to follow about Copley and Prudential below). Here are some of my favorites around town:

Modern (and not so modern) Architecture:
Check out the Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston Street. Stunning building outside, splendid inside. Enter via the Dartmouth Street entrance near the lions.

TIP: This area is called Copley Square, located one block of Newbury Street. There are several architectural highlights in this square, from the Trinity Episcopal Church dating back to the late 1800s, to the towering John Hancock building, it's modern lines in sharp contrast to Trinity Church. Be sure to snap a photo of these two together. Walk over to the Copley Square hotel for a taste of times' past, too. This hotel opened its doors back on July 4, 1891. Copley Square also has an indoor shopping complex with hotels, upscale stores (Tiffany's, Armani, Coach, Barney's to name a few, along with several restaurants. The Copley Mall entrance to the left of the main entrance to the Boston Public Library, and it connects you to the Shops at Prudential Center via a glass tunnel built over Huntington Avenue. These shops are more affordable than the ones found at Copley, and include Jasmine Sola, Ann Taylor, Sephora, and many others, along with a Barnes + Noble book store and the Cheesecake Factory, Dick's Last Resort, Legal Seafood's, California Pizza Kitchen and an entire food court area. Make sure you ask someone where to locate the entrance to the Prudential building and take the elevator to the Top of the Hub for a full city view and a great martini. The views from Top of the Hub are to die for - you have to journey up to the hub!

Oh, and don't miss our newest addition - the Zakim bridge. For a complete guide to Boston Architecture, click here.

Modern Windows III

We have covered Loewen and Vista Films. 2 great components when considering optimal modern windows. Quality windows increase the beauty of the building or house, increase optical quality of scenery outside, reduce heat, glare and sound, and increase insulation.

Now we look at a more specialty company, that is primarily used for commercial applications, but could be very sleek in certain residential applications.

MechoShade Systems is a world leader in Window shading systems and solutions:
- Automated Solar Shading
- Daylight Management
- Brightness Controls

Mechoshade

In the thirty years since the founding of the company in 1968, MechoShade Systems , Inc. continues to be a pioneer in the development of solar shading, including the development of its' hugely successful T hermoVeil® and EuroVeil® shadecloth lines and creative solutions to brightness, glare and solar control problems.

Through the research and engineering capabilities that created the MechoShade system in the beginning, MechoShade has become the only single source solar shading designer and manufacture of hardware, shadecloth and accessories. MechoShade is in the forefront of energy efficient solar shading design at the window wall to achieve personal, thermal, and visual comfort in conjunction with the more efficient use of natural resources. Get Your Frost On!

143479963_c30db1aaa6
By: Holly Becker

Looking to hide from a peeping Tom (or Jane)?

Whether you're a country mouse, a city mouse, or a mouse in the 'burbs, privacy is always a concern. One major trend I see sweeping across the UK and into America lately is chic frosted film - decals that are as stylish as they are functional. Sure, frosted glass has been around for ages, but the ability to purchase an affordable and modern peel -n- stick version on a budget - brilliant!

Brume in the UK produces the slickest patterns - get your frost on in style! Easy to fit, Brume window film gives you the privacy you crave while allowing natural light into the room, and since the film laminates the glass, it makes it nearly impossible to smash. Get creative and apply it to cabinet doors and interior doors, too.

Purlfrost is another chic frosted window film company based in London, available in plain or patterned and super easy to install. Purlfrost will also work with you if you have artwork that you'd like created into frosted film (how cool!). If you order soon, you can take advantage of thier special - order any 2 foils of the same design & size and get 30% off the second one. I just love the nature designs... Check them out!

With these clever resources, I guess your only question now is, "To frost or not to frost..."

A few frost-worthy examples:

Outdoor Party Lighting Ideas

Vessel

Summer is just around the corner and you are probably planning your outdoor parties.  Lighting is an important element that shouldn't be forgotten.  If your yard doesn't have the perfect lighting for your party, there are some quick lighting options that will light up your party in no time.

Cordless lighting options are the best for table tops so you don't have to tape down cords and risk your guests tripping.  Candles are an old stand -by that gives off a nice glow.    There are candle holders that are wind resistant, such as traditional Huricane Lamps, so you won't have to relight your candles all night.  If you have umbrella tables, a centerpiece that wraps around the umbrella post looks beautiful.  If you want a maintenance free and more colorful option, try Vessel's Candela 4 Lights.  They are lit by rechargeable battery so they won't blow out.

For ambient lighting, fire pits or torches are always fun for outdoor parties.  If you have a beautiful tree, fountain, or piece of artwork in your backyard, lighting it from the ground up is a stunning way to enhance your party's atmosphere.  Target has a Solar Flood/Spotlight available on-line that will eliminate the need for unsightly and hazardous cords.

Be creative with other outdoor lighting ideas too.  Place Christmas tree lights in your trees or line your patio with them.  Hang interesting string lights from trees or awnings.  You can always get a festive set of string lights and hang them along the eaves or under the patio umbrellas.  The brightly colored Candeloos by Vessel which are very whimsical and can be placed anywhere because they are cordless.

Don't forget to light footpaths for your guests.  Target has a few different styles of solar path lights, such as the Solar Metal Wedge Lights in Silver.  If there are children coming to your party or if the path is in a shady place, use these Candela Pro Lights from Vessel.  They are cool to the touch and rechargeable.

With these suggestions, and your imagination, your summer party will be a hit. Your yard will sparkle and create the perfect ambiance.  Your guests will think you hired an electrician just for this occasion.

The couch potato is back again!

I have posted a few articles on Modern TV Consoles and Plasma TV Art.

Today I am going to shed some light on an affordable unit that is sturdy, well-designed, and customizable to fit in all rooms: The Blu Dot Strata 4 Unit.

Norman Jaffe

Norman_jaffe

Last weekend, I took a bizarre little road trip with a friend who is looking for a place to rent in Montauk (Hamptons, NY), for the summer. It was pretty desolate this time of year, but peaceful. Ronnie, my friend, is very familiar with the area and pointed out several architectural phenoms in the area. One in particular that caught my eye was the Krieger House, designed by Norman Jaffe.

It made me do a little research and I was continually impressed.

(From www.parishart.org) Norman Jaffe, who studied architecture at UC Berkeley in California, built over 600 projects during his thirty-five year career. He received numerable architecture awards and also participated in national and international exhibitions at leading institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York. And it was on Eastern Long Island that Jaffe found his niche to create the ultimate vacation homes and explore his love of light and form.

Jaffe

Norman Jaffe’s first visit to Eastern Long Island was in the 1960s. Struck by the lowness of the landscape and the mysterious exchange between the sea and sky, he returned frequently and in 1973 decided to move to Bridgehampton on a permanent basis to establish an architectural practice. Perhaps best remembered for his strikingly sculptural beach houses on the East End, Jaffe, during a 26-year period of practice in the Hamptons—from 1967 until his drowning death in 1993— designed more than 50 houses in the region, ranging from small weekend hideaways to large summer estates straddling the ocean dunes. His portfolio of local work includes a golf club, a synagogue, and a restaurant, in addition to numerous houses.

Jaffe always found inspiration in a wide range of sources, but for his 1985 project the Gates of the Grove for The Jewish Center of the Hamptons, East Hampton, he had a myriad of possibilities from which to draw. There had never been a consistent style of synagogue architecture, so he drew from an array of influences ranging from Eastern European shtetls to New England barns. Alastair Gordon notes that Jaffe wanted to create “a sense of space that was modern and steeped in religious allegory.” The finished sanctuary, which exhibits an exterior form reminiscent of the old wooden synagogues of Eastern Europe is decidedly contemporary with large bands of skylights allowing natural light to bathe the congregants and an interior rich with finished light woods and floors and dadoes made of dolomite limestone. Gates of the Grove marked a high point in Jaffe’s career and brought the architect a new level of respect among his colleagues and the general public.

Krieger_house

A full-color 240 page catalogue to be co-published by The Parrish Art Museum and The Monacelli Press will complement the exhibition and provide audiences with a unique and insightful guide into the artist’s life and work. Romantic Modernist: The Life and Work of Norman Jaffe, Architect is the first book to explore Jaffe’s body of work and the inner struggle that shaped his life. Through interviews with Jaffe’s closest friends and associates, Alastair Gordon traces Jaffe’s career from his early years on the West Coast through his celebrated life in New York. The catalogue will be available in The Parrish Art Museum shop at a cost of $35(softcover) and $50 (hardcover).

Rock On!

Face it. There's a rock star inside of us all. Imagine, a sea of devoted fans screaming your name as you belt out lyrics of love gone very wrong, effortlessly strumming your guitar in $700 designer jeans. We all want a piece of that.

Unfortunately, with most of us barely qualified to belt out Lucky Star at some overly intoxicated 3:00 a.m. karaoke session, we may have to put our dreams of touring the world on hold.

Despite rock stardom not being on your future to-do list, you can still live like one. I just love these posters from Strawberry Luna, a screen printer and designer born and raised in Philadelphia. She designs the best concert posters ever, along with a whole slew of other cool prints. Visit her online to read her bio and to view her super hip posters and prints.

Go ahead, unleash your inner rock star. Just don't grab a mic. Go easy on your peeps. Toss up a few posters instead.

Mebel TV Credenza

You're all probably thinking that I am a total couch potato with my recent posts about Modern TV Consoles and Plasma Art :)

Well not so much. I think I like the idea of time to watch TV or maybe I like watching the furniture around it better? Issues I need to look into...I promise.

Today, I will send another Modern TV Credenza your way, this one by uber-craftsmen: MEBEL Furniture

Mebel_furniture
The Mebel TV Credenza has an optional panel for flat panel mounting. 3 options for storage include an open cubby with pull down panel to access media players and a pull out media drawer. Built of solid walnut or maple with brushed stainless steel legs.

MEBEL's wood is sealed with a clear varnish, which creates a natural rubbed finish. Unlike sprayed glossy lacquer, their pieces do not have an assembly line look or feel. This process also creates a durable surface which is easy to maintain.

Mebel
